frequently asked questions

Can I get a larger hard drive?

Yes! We will advise you on the best option for your requirements and will source, fit and migrate your data (if requested) from your old drive to a new one.

Do I need to upgrade my computer?

If you are finding your computer is running slowly, or a few years old, it is worth considering upgrading. If you are happy keeping your machine, we can perform a health check and tune up to get it running at optimal performance. If you are wanting to upgrade specific parts of your machine, we can also help sourcing and fitting them for you.

How can I keep my computer running properly?

The simplest answer is to keep your computer fully up to date. This means installing updates from the programs you use, as well as Windows Update. You can also run Anti-Virus scans reguarly, and keep an eye open for suspicious programs or behaviours. If you think your computer is not running properly, contact us now!

How long will it take to fix my computer?

We make every effort to get your computer back to you in as little time as possible. In most cases you can expect to have your laptop back within 48 hours, but may be longer depending on the severity of the problem, or if we need to order in parts. Either way you will be kept up to speed throughout the repair and given an estimated time when your computer will be ready for collection.

How much memory do I need?

This depends on your usage. Typically a modern personal laptop comes with 2GB and above. We recommend 2GB as a minimum. The more memory you have installed, the quicker your computer can run, so generally the more the merrier! There is a maximum amount of memory a computer can recognise and use efficiently depending on your system, but we are more than happy to advise you further.

Is a system rebuild really necessary?

We do our best to avoid a complete rebuild, but sometimes starting with a clean slate is best for you and the computer. A rebuild removes all viruses and malware, as well as removing junk slowing your computer down. We will backup and migrate all your data and specific programs for you in this process.

Is there any way to make browsing the web faster?

Yes! Browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox have add-ons or extensions which you can install to block and disable adverts. We recommend "Ad-block plus" - it blocks all the adverts, allowing each page to load faster, and give you a cleaner looking page. You can also download add-ons to stop Flash content (like videos) loading, making your browsing super-fast, and all for free!

Should I use a free Anti-Virus?

For most personal and home computers, using a free anti-virus program such as AVG is all you will need. They provide excellent protection across multiple areas, and will comfortably protect you. If you are looking for complete protection of your system, a paid program may suit you better. One downside to paid programs is that they are usually much larger and use a lot more system resources, slowing down your computer.

What is Open Office?

Open Office is a free program which is an alternative to Microsoft Office. We will usually install this if a client does not have a paid license for Office.

What is the best size screen for my laptop?

There is no right answer to this question, but personal preference. If you want to buy a laptop to replace a desktop PC, where the laptop will not be moving much, you may want to purchase a larger laptop. The most popular choice for home entertainment and portability is a 15” screen. If you are looking real portability then a 10” or 12” netbook may be the laptop size you are looking for.

Which Brand should I choose?

With so many brands out there now, it’s hard to make the right choice. Like everything else these days you pay more for a Brand name, for example Sony and Samsung laptops tend to be more expensive than HP or Acer. Generally it makes no difference what the brand of the computer is, rather the specification of the insides! If you are looking for a great compromise between price and performance, Asus, Toshiba and HP are excellent choices.
